Seattle Vocational Institute does not discriminate on the basis of disability in the admission or access to, or treatment, or employment in its programs or activities. The Compliance Officer, located in the Administration Office at the college, has been designated to coordinate compliance with the non-discrimination requirements contained in section 35.107 of the Department of Justice regulations. Seattle Vocational Institute provides support services to help students with disabilities meet their educational needs.Students with special needs are encouraged to contact the Disability Support Services office prior to registration and present certified documentation to help determine what services are needed. Support services include advocacy, audiological referral services, counseling, interpreters, notetakers, readers, consultation with faculty and special testing accommodation. Students with physical disabilities such as blindness, deafness and wheelchair users can qualify for this accommodation. Adaptive Equipment for students with special needs may be available upon request from the Disability Support Services office at Seattle Central Community College in Room BE1147. Arrangements can be made through the Student Assistance Office at SVI.

In order that students are protected against improper disclosure of their records, the Seattle Community College District has adopted procedures in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) as amended in November 1996 by the Improving American Schools Acts of 1994. FERPA applies to all schools which receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education and is designed to protect the privacy of a student's educational records and assure the rights of a student to view his or her educational records upon request. Information about Seattle Community Colleges students is collected, maintained and used to meet the college's educational objectives. The Washington State Legislature passed legislation in 2003 requiring all of the state's public colleges and universities to develop policies to ensure that students complete degree and certification programs in a timely manner. In response to this mandate, the Seattle Community Colleges formalized its policy on minimum grade point average and added components to address the amount of time students can take to complete their programs.
 
What does the policy say?
Briefly, the Student Progress Policy (district policy 311) says that students are expected to make satisfactory progress while enrolled at the Seattle Community Colleges. Satisfactory progress means that students are passing and completing their coursework and educational programs.
 
What happens if a student does not make satisfactory progress?
Students enrolled at SVI campus who meet any of the following criteria will be contacted by college personnel:

• Students who do not maintain a 2.0 grade point average and 91% attendance.
• Students who have a pattern of not successfully making up attendance deficiencies by the mid point of the subsequent quarter.
• Students who have taken more than 125% of the required quarters to complete thier program.

 
Program Administrators will work with students to develop an educational plan and identify strategies and resources tailored to individual needs and circumstances.
 
When does the Student Progress Policy go into effect?
The Seattle Community College District's Board of Trustees adopted the Student Progress Policy in February 2004. The procedures that describe how the policy will be applied at each campus are effective Fall Quarter 2004. Notices to students who are not making satisfactory academic progress will be based initially on Fall quarter 2004 grades.
 
How will the students know if they are in violation of a student progress standard?
Students who are in violation of one or more student progress standard will recieve a letter from the college: it will be sent to the home address that is on record with the college registration office. The letter will explain what the the student needs to do and resources that are available to help the student meet the student student progress standards in the future.
