This course is designed to provide
the student the opportunity to learn basic mathematical
applications of fractions, decimals and percentages, addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as the use of
the ten-key machine and its functions in the work place. In this course you will
learn/relearn/review basic math fundamentals for use in later
courses at SVI as well as learn how to use the ten-key
machine. There is a strong emphasis on practical applications in
both business and health environments.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide
the student the opportunity to learn basic mathematical
applications of fractions, decimals and percentages, addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as the use of
the ten-key machine and its functions in the work place.
Course Purpose And Goals: In this course you will
learn/relearn/review basic math fundamentals for use in later
courses at SVI as well as learn how to use the ten-key
machine. There is a strong emphasis on practical applications in
both business and health environments.
Program Outcomes: To successfully complete this course
you will need to demonstrate:
An understanding of the business use of addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division by:
1. accurately rounding numbers
2. accurately estimating and calculating
numbers
3. accurately calculating averages,
fractions, decimals, and percentages
4. accurately converting fractions, decimals,
and percents
5. accurately calculating math answers to
business problems
6. identifying standard ruler measurements
and measuring using standard ruler
An ability to use a ten-key machine by correctly
using:
7. the round off switch
8. the add mode
9. numbering functions
10. the total key
11. the subtotal key
12. the equal key
13. the decimal selector
An ability to use a ten key machine to:
14. produce a five-minute timing with a
minimum score of 80 strokes per minute after
errors with 3 or fewer errors
15. identify the home row keys and key by
touch
16. change ten key ribbons and tapes

Learning Resources: The ten-key lab (room 502) is
available to practice ten key from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday when an instructor, instructional technician, or
tutor is available.
Feedback/Evaluation: Students will be observed daily by
the instructor. Feedback will be given as needed on technique,
and direction will be given in order to improve ten key speed
and accuracy.
Grading Policy: SVI uses the following grading system:
A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0
Grades will be based on meeting the
program outcome competencies listed above.
Attendance Policy: SVI as a clock-hour institution has a
100% attendance policy. Any hour that you are absent from class,
you must make up. A student must have a total attendance of no
less than 91% to maintain Satisfactory Attendance Progress. If a
student does not meet the attendance requirement for the course,
the student may arrange with the instructor to make up the hours
necessary to complete the attendance requirement.
