Project Abstract
PREFACE
Welcome to our Office Simulation class. First and
foremost, my teaching philosophy is grounded on the fact that
our class syllabus is our "learning contract."
The
final design and creation of this Office Simulation training curriculum were based on
the actual experiences of your instructor while studying at the UW
Graduate School of Public Affairs, College of Ocean and Fishery
Sciences and Business School, SVI Business Computer Program,
and South Seattle Community College Occupational Teacher/Trainer
Education Program. This was developed in combination with his more than 30 years of
experience working as a Trainer, Project Leader and Site Manager
both here in the U.S. and abroad, planning and implementing foreign-funded
programs and projects, including his internship at the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, professional
affiliations in the U.S. as a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, and as
an instructor here at SVI since 1993 to the present.
He
has been teaching Office Simulation
since 1997 to date for the
Seattle
Vocational
Institute and Seattle
Jobs
Initiative
Administrative Office Professional
and
Office Technician students,
respectively. The intructor's learnings, insights, and
experiences and his students' feedback in every class have been
thoroughly documented by the author for instructional purposes,
or as a training manual for the benefit of the
succeeding group of students.

You are to work into five groups of business
entrepreneurs, creating and managing your own company,
headquartered in Seattle. Working as a team of four members composed of a Manager,
Administrative Officer, Human Resources Officer,
and
Payroll Officer, using your company's products and/or services,
and adhering to your mission statement, you will be simulating the conduct
of the daily
activities in an office environment.
Daily Briefing and Pointers from
the Instructor/Coordinator
The required tasks may include, but not
limited to completing a wide range of standard business tasks, such as
creating, formatting and editing documents, creating and performing
calculations of time cards and payroll worksheets,
conducting meetings, and managing the team. You are all encouraged to
complete more complex business computer applications.
Specific guidelines will be given through a series of
memoranda, in addition to any verbal instructions given each day to the
class.
I
expect to have your respective team organized into a simulated company and its
Employee
Policy Handbook completed
by the end of the quarter (refer to
SJI Office Simulation
and
Members
Weekly Schedule page). Since I am your instructor and also
your business consultant, we plan on using this site to share plans,
pictures of our progress, and useful hints.
