Seattle Vocational Institute Dental Assistant Program

Clinical I & II Protocol

As dental assistant students at SVI you are required to wear a uniform daily. Your professionalism is shown in your daily actions and presentation on how you wear your uniform.

ALL STUDENTS SHOULD

Keep yourself busy- help each other clean, organize and study

bullet

Know what their clinical duty is for the week

bullet

Prepare and disinfect your own operator area, x-ray rooms, and lab

bullet

Wear a neat and clean uniform

bullet

Shower and use deodorant daily, keep hair neat, clean, and tied back

bullet

NOT wear strong colognes and lotions

bullet

Wear white or lavender (only) long sleeve shirt under uniform top (if needed)

bullet

Thermal top underwear are not considered to be appropriate attire

bullet

Wear white or lavender/purple shoes (closed toe)

bullet

Omit shoes with black rubber soles

bullet

NOT wear scarves or hats

bullet

NOT chew gum, eat or drink in classroom (water only)

bullet

NOT wear facial piercing, wear minimal jewelry, hoop earrings should be smaller that a quarter

bullet

Inform the instructor/instructors if leaving early or coming in late

bullet

Stay until dismissed, be on time returning from breaks and lunch as directed

bullet

Absolutely no electronic devices in clinic or classroom i.e.. cell phone, i-pod

 

** At the end of each clinical day there will be a clinical class discussion before

dismissal (this is not a grievance session)

IMPORTANT: At the beginning of each quarter you are individually given 100 points for professionalism. For not complying with the information above five (5) points will be deducted for each occurrence.

All of the instructors will be involved in this evaluation.

Dental Assistant Program Policies

 

If your late over 15 minutes you will have 1 hour of time to make up (you will lose professionalism points starting at 8:01)

You must call in at (206) 587-4946 if you are late or absent

During classroom time only ONE person at a time has the floor unless it is group discussions

There will absolutely NOT be any electronic devices on during classroom time

If you are ill or tired you may be excused, having your head down during class is not acceptable

Quizzes may be given announced or unannounced

If you are late or absent quizzes may not be made up

Complete uniforms will be worn every day upon arrival

Vaccinations are needed before entering in to 2nd quarter (paperwork will be turned into your instructor) and a copy goes to the externship coordinator

Grading Criteria For Clinical

1. Knowledge of procedure:

             · Student knows set-up for procedure

             · Student knows steps/order of procedure

             · Student understands purpose of procedure

2. Demonstrates ability to perform procedures:

              · Performs procedure accurately (4 handed dentistry)

              · Performs procedure timely

              · Demonstrates critical thinking skills

3. Teamwork/Professionalism:

                        · Student works well with patients

                        · Student works well with instructors

                        · Student works well with classmates

                        · Student follows directions of instructors

                        · Student works independently

                     · Student participates in clinic

                       · Student demonstrates professional attitude

                       · Student follows dress code and conduct code

                       · Student is on time

                       · Student doesn’t leave early

 

                  A = 10 points (acceptable)

                 Student demonstrates proficiency in all areas

             N.P. =  8 points (needs practice)

            Student demonstrates proficiency in 80% of procedure

                     N.C. = No Credit

                    Student fails in any one category

Clinical procedures I &II

Student Grading Criteria

 

Each student will be graded with the following grading system:

· Teamwork/Professionalism – 100 points

· Clinical Knowledge – 100 points

· Clinical procedure (patients Only) – 100 points

· Mid Quarter Evaluation - 100 Points

· Topical sites (clinical - I) – 100 points

· Skull Test (clinical -II) – 100 points

· case studies – 100 points

· Group Project – 100 points

· Outreach Project – 100 points

· Final Written Test – 100 points

 

Each student will be graded on knowledge and ability to perform clinical procedures.

Each student will be responsible for getting his or her own patients for each procedure.

Professionalism/Teamwork will be weighed heavily and will factor in your overall grade (100 pts.)

Student will be given no more than 2 chances in a procedure and must perform at 80% to receive credit.

Students final grade will be determined by the input of all clinical instructors.

Each clinical session is worth 100 points

Each separate procedure is worth 10 points

Clinical Grading as follows:

A= Acceptable 10 points

NP= Needs practice 8 points

NC= No credit 10 points will be deducted for each error

Students are responsible for acquiring their own patients

You need to understand that it is your responsibility to find your own patients. If you need to get signed off for a certain procedure we will do the best we can to accommodate but it is ultimately your job. Finding your own patients will insure your clinical time will be complete.
