HUC StudentsThe Health Unit Coordinator manages the administrative duties involved in patient care and is the liaison between inpatient, outpatient and medical staff. Work settings may include hospitals, doctor's offices, clinics and nursing homes.

A typical day for a coordinator would include patient reception, interpreting doctor's handwriting, ordering and scheduling tests, chart assembly, data entry, verifying insurance, performing transfers, discharging and admitting hospitalized patients.

Additional skills and traits include comprehension and use of medical terminology, prioritizing and handling stressful situations while maintaining a professional manner.

The job outlook for this position is increasing due to population growth and expanding medical technology.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course of study in the Health Unit Coordinator Program students should be able to:
  1. Understand basic human anatomical structure.
  2. Interpret, understand and utilize basic medical terminology.
  3. Demonstrate with 90% accuracy transcription of medication, treatment, activity, and laboratory, diagnostic and miscellaneous orders.
  4. Possess the necessary knowledge and skills for
    ·    Admitting, discharging, transferring, preoperative and post-operative patients
    ·    Handling medical emergencies such as respiratory or cardiac arrests at hospitals and outpatient facilities
    ·    Checking patients into a doctor's office, including verification of patient insurance
    ·    Coding diagnoses and medical procedures with numeric or alpha-numeric codes
  5. Distinguish the differences between commercial and HMO insurance plans through direct research with insurance companies and analysis of the insurance cards and claim forms.
  6. Demonstrate proper communication, including proper phone etiquette, and effective interpersonal skills among clerical and medical staff and with patients in a medical clinical setting.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of job readiness with resume building, interviewing skills, and complete competency in all Health Unit Coordinating skills by successfully completing an externship.
Steps To Success
Obtain a Health Unit Coordinator Certificate of Completion at Seattle Vocational Institute. Pass the national certification examination administered by the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC).
 
Admission Policy
Students must meet the Career Programs Assessment Test (CPAt) score for admission. This is a Veterans Administration (VA) approved program.
